The Little Lights, They Aren’t Twinkling

November 29, 2004

There may not be 25,000 of them. And they may not be imported Italian. And they probably won’t need to turn on the Auxiliary Nuclear because of us. But it’s infinately more than we had last year! Now I wish I would have put in an outdoor electral outlet or two.

Naw, That’s ‘Em Balsams

November 29, 2004

Jess and I started off our fun old fashioned family Christmas today by hopping into the four wheel drive sleigh and heading out into the wilderness to find the perfect tree. You see, kids, this is how our forefathers did it.

We headed west into the wilderness of Beaver County to find our seasonal icon. First we stopped at Janoski’s, where we purchased last year’s Frasier Fir. Their selection wasn’t too great, so we left and tried Chiodo’s, about 3 miles from Janoski’s. They had far more trees, and better looking, too. We ended up with a Canaan Fir, also know as a Balsam. It’s a decent looking tree. I wish it were fatter, like last years, but all the trees seemed to have spent the last year counting carbs or something like that.

Skip Ads on your DVD? That could be illegal.

November 19, 2004

A new bill before Congress could make fast-forwarding through ads and previews on a DVD you watch at home illegal.

Here’s the story on the local news site.

“Their concern is, if it becomes easy for people to skip ads, then their whole business model goes down the drain,” said some dumb lobbiest whose job is to buy off your elected officials.

Cry me a freakin’ river. That’s part of business, right? If you’re providing something that people don’t want, they’re not going to take it. You don’t need to force-feed ads to people to get them to see movies. I mean, they’re watching a DVD, right? One could extrapolate from the fact that they’re watching a movie that they’ll be inclined to watch more movies.

A Glimpse Into The Future

November 18, 2004

Check out this picture from 1954 of a model of what computers will look like in 2004. Thanks to Gene for the pic.

“Scientists from the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a ‘home computer’ could look like in the year 2004. However the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admit that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work, but 50 years from now scientific progress is expected to solve these problems. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use.”

Hombrewin’ Pictures

November 14, 2004

I got started at about 8:45 this morning working on my Christmas beer – a Spiced Irish Stout. The wort is cooling outside in the 45° shade. Once it falls to 70°F, I’ll pitch the yeast then let it ferment for 1 week. Next weekend I’ll bottle.

I took some pictures of the brewing process as I went along.

Chrismas Brew Recipe

November 13, 2004

After searching all over the web, I’ve picked the recipe that I’m gonna brew for Christmas. It’s an Irish Christmas Stoudt. It’s a dark beer, spiced with honey, cinnamon, fresh ginger, allspice, cloves, and orange zest. It should be quite good, I hope. I’m headed over to the Brew Supply Shop to get the ingredients today. I’ll be brewin’ tomorrow and drinkin on Christmas.
