Christmas 2005

December 28, 2005

Another Christmas has come and gone. Good times were had. Holiday movies were watched. Eggnog was drank. Cookies were eaten. Trees were destroyed by brown beasts with floppy ears.

Santa was good all around this year, and here are some pictures of the day’s goings-on.

Santa should be comin’ soon. I hope he hasn’t had to skip this house because some little boys weren’t in bed!

Mythbusters Respond

December 21, 2005

A month ago, a call went out to the readers of Slashdot (“news for nerds, stuff that matters”) to come up with questions to ask Jamie and Adam of the Discovery Channel’s “Mythbusters.” The top-rated questions were then forwarded to the duo for them to answer. Today, their answers were posted.

The same was done for Alton Brown some time ago. Here are his responses to the questions presented to him.

Atari Flashback

December 18, 2005

On Thursday morning I was taking the bird feeder in through the back door to fill it when I noticed that there was a package that had been left there by Mr. UPS. I wasn’t expecting any packages from UPS, so I took it inside and saw that it was from Robert & Donna. I opened it up and inside was the Atari Flashback 2. It wasn’t gift wrapped, so I just had to test it to make sure it still worked after spending the night outside.

Thanks Robert & Donna!

Website Problems

December 18, 2005

I apologize to anybody that attempted to reach any of the cyprych.com web sites over the past few days. The hard disk drive in the web server died. Luckily, it gave a few days’ notice in the form of intermittent failures before actually going belly-up, so I was able to back-up the weblog database.

The site is back up now, running a fresh copy of SuSE Linux 10.0. Oh, and I got a nice, silent 120GB hard drive for $40 at Beast Buy – and a Seagate, no less!

Christmas Tree, Updated

December 10, 2005

I have added three more pictures to the picture page for this years Christmas Tree. After putting up the tree last Saturday, we decided that it looked really bare since we couldn’t put up the glass ball ornaments with a rabid beast on the loose in the house while we’re at work. So on Sunday we headed over to Jo-Ann Fabrics to check out their holiday decorations sale. We got about a dozen to fifteen new ornaments and four rolls of ribbon with which to make bows all for $26. They were having a 60% off sale.

Many of the bows are now off the tree, since someone decided to pull them off and shred them while we were at work on Tuesday. Suffice it to say that between that and yesterday’s down pillow incident, Simon has seen his share of punishment for the week. We’ve realized that on both days that he attacked things, packages were delivered to the house so there was a stranger at the front door.

Sometimes It Snows Inside, Too.

December 10, 2005

It snowed Thurday night. There was about 5-6″ of snow on the ground by the time it stopped just before 5:00AM Friday. I didn’t have time to clear our driveway before work, so I just shoveled the sidewalk and dug out the Jeep, leaving the rest to be cleared after returning home in the evening. When we got home around 6:30 last night, I was ready to have to dig-out the driveway, but I never imagined we’d have to dig out the living room!

Moral of the story: Don’t leave down throw pillows on the couch for you young dog to shred while you’re at work.

If You Don’t Hurry Up, We’re Gonna Miss All the Good Trees!

December 4, 2005

Yesterday Jess and I purchased and trimmed our Christmas tree. We found a very nice tree at the first place we looked – Chiodo’s tree farm in Beaver county. That’s the same place we got last year’s tree. This year, we have a Frasier Fir – the same kind of tree we had for our first Christmas in this house in 2003. Last year we bought a Balsam but decided we liked the Frasier better.

You’ll notice in the pictures that we’re not using the five-gallon bucket with gravel & bricks system for a tree stand anymore! We’ve classed the place up a bit with a new welded-steel job from the Home Depot. It’s pretty nice, and is very stable. Also, because it’s not 24″ tall like the bucket, I don’t have to trim off all the branches from the bottom, leaving a tree that looks like an umbrella anymore. The only drawback is that it doesn’t hold very much water, but it holds enough to feed the tree for the better part of a day. Here are the pictures.

For reference here are pictures of the 2003 tree and 2004 tree.
